Dr. Calleja grew up between Santiago, Chile, and Northern Chilean Patagonia. After receiving his first DDS and a Master's in Public Health, he practiced for 7 years before moving to the US to earn a second DDS at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Calleja founded and managed multiple surgical healthcare volunteering programs for the Chilean Patagonia with isolated and underserved populations. This qualified him for a Master's in Public Health scholarship. He later underwent extensive dental implant training in Barcelona, Spain.
During his time at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, he continued to participate in mission trips to Kenya and Guatemala. His residency exposed him to severe maxillofacial trauma, corrective jaw surgeries, and oral surgery at institutions including Washington Hospital Center, the National Institute of Health (NIH), and Children's National Medical Center.
Finally, committed to the most complex cases, he completed a Cleft and Craniomaxillofacial Fellowship at Charleston Area Medical Center Children's Hospital, working with one of the oldest cleft lip and palate teams in the country.
Dr. Calleja is an expert in Face and Jaw surgery using patient-specific implants and minimally invasive surgical methods. He practices full scope Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including Orthognathic Surgery, Cleft and Craniomaxillofacial surgery, Facial Trauma, and TMJ arthroscopic surgery.
Aside from Dr. Calleja's educational background, research, and achievements, He is fluent in Spanish and English. He has a great passion for helping patients and continues to attend medical mission trips to South America. With his Patagonian roots, he is committed to providing compassionate healthcare, treating patients as if they were family.
If pronouncing the Calleja last name is complicated in English, no worries! Many patients and friends call him Dr. Sergio or Dr. "C".
Above all, Dr. Calleja likes spending time with his beautiful wife and son, traveling to Canada or South America, while enjoying the multiple attractions the DMV area has to offer.
